This week we heard that the National Lottery Community Fund is giving Stream Walk Community Garden nearly £20,000 to help develop an 18-month programme of inclusive organic gardening sessions for disadvantaged community members. Wow!
These sessions are going to really help Whitstable locals experiencing low emotional wellbeing, social isolation and economic disadvantage or don’t have access to a safe, nature-rich environment.
Our plans include:
- 58 weekly ‘quiet’ community drop-ins for adults with disabilities or poor health

- 17 nature/growing sessions for a pre-school gardening club and 2 Family Fun days for families without gardens
- 44 nature / food growing sessions with disadvantaged young people
- 2 ticketed intergenerational whole community events providing free tickets for families in need and a 1.5 hour early inclusive ‘quiet’ session for neuro-diverse adults and children
We’ve had a fantastic couple of years really developing our role in the community with family events and a weekly pre-school group. We’ve run sessions for young people struggling with neuro-divergence,mental ill-health and / or issues related to SEN or being LGBTQ and our Volunteer and visitor numbers have tripled since 2021
The National Lottery gives out more than £500 million to charities, community and voluntary groups each year and we’re very chuffed to have been selected and can’t wait to get cracking with our plans.
